Sally Henry Memorial Award Winner—2012Deb CampbellBy Pat Moynihan-Morris This award is presented in memory of Sally Henry, a memorable Home Economist who had a great enthusiasm for life, and many diverse interests beyond her professional commitments. I am pleased and honoured to present my good friend and colleague Deb Campbell for the 2012 Sally Henry Award for her contributions in Home Economics and her voluntary work with various organizations. Deb Campbell has been a professional colleague, mentor and friend for the past twenty five years. Deb Campbell graduated from the University of Western Ontario - Brescia College in 1972. Deb Campbell is a professional Home Economist with over forty years of diversified experience in many facets of our industry. Following graduation, Deb taught Food Service Management at Centralia College from 1972- May 1976. This was followed with covering maternity leaves at Brescia College in the food labs and textile program until l981. In 1981, Deb returned to Centralia College teaching the Food Service Management until the college closed its doors in 1994. Deb was Ontario Pork's county co-ordinator for the Huron Perth counties, promoting Ontario Pork at numerous agricultural shows such as the London Fair and the Royal Winter Fair, through cooking demonstration and consumer liaison. She also did recipe development, consumer affairs and marketing - all aspects of the industry. Deb embodies all the values a true professional home economist. Deb has been an active member of OHEA since its inception, a member of OHEIB, and an active member in her local branch, serving on too many committees over the years to mention here. Deb is also part of the Gwyneth Bailey Simpson Communications Award (CHE Foundation) selection committee and has written media releases for OHEA. Throughout the years, despite her hectic and busy professional life, Deb has always managed to volunteer in her community. Deb is an active member at the Exeter United Church and she is heavily involved in charity events in the Huron/Perth community. If you visit the area and are out with Deb, you will be stopped at least a dozen times by people stopping to chat with Deb! She is an "institution in the area" - with a smile on her face and always a kind word for everyone. Deb Campbell received the 2009 Ontario Volunteer Award from the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration at a ceremony in Stratford. The Huron County Health Unit nominated Deb for her work with Heart Health over many years and for commitment and dedication as a volunteer in Ontario. She has chaired "Take Heart Huron", the county's heart health program for a number of years. In the early 1980's Deb wrote a program called "Cooking for a Healthy Heart" which led to books written by Anne Lindsay for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Deb has also written education programs as part of her real passion - community development. Deb Campbell is a very deserving recipient of the Sally Henry Award. |
